This is an illustration of tofu, including a version with blood splatter—just in case someone were to bump their head on its corner. The idea comes from a Japanese proverb that symbolizes extreme misfortune. Since tofu is soft and fragile, the notion of injuring oneself on its corner is used to express the absurdity and unluckiness of the situation. Originally phrased as “hit one’s head on the corner of tofu,” the expression has since been shortened. It’s often used when something unexpectedly bad happens, especially through no fault of your own—something so unlucky you might say, “It’s like bumping into the corner of tofu.”
